Albizzia julibrisin 'Rosea'

Silk Tree. Erect to spreading large shrub with fern-like mid-green leaves. Bears clusters of pink spidery flowers. Max Height 6m. Max Spread 4m. Flowers June to July. Full sun. Moving into more
northerly gardens as the climate changes. We have no problems whatsoever with it getting knocked by frosts unless we molly coddle it too much in the late winter when you may well think it needs wrapping up to keep it happy. We find that all this achieves is an early breaking of shoots that are far more at risk from of a late frost than would be the case if it is given a harder time. It can be frustrating waiting for the plants to grow new leaves in the spring but well worth it and in 2008 we have had flowers on 2year old plants which are a first for us. Its tripinnate mimosa like leaves slowly close during at dusk and during periods of rain, the leaflets bowing downward as if the tree were sleeping: its modern Persian name shabkhosb means "night sleeper" (from shab "night" and -khosb
"sleeper"). Its pink flowers are likely to become a more common sight in years to come. The tallest tree I have seen is around 4-5m but apparently it can grow to 12m.
